...In Jesus Name, Amen.

Thanks for the myriad of responses to the last post. NEW TOPIC!

So, the kids were told by Grandmama that if you don't end your prayer with the verbiage, "in Jesus name, Amen" it doesn't get heard by God. Really? What about the "un-churched"? God doesn't hear their prayers? I'm just sayin'... your thoughts?

A little back ground on my crazy mom. She was born and raised die hard Church of Christ. If you werent running HIGH fever or in the hospital then you should be at church. If the Elders open the doors, you are there. Now, I do remember growing up and she telling me if you dont end your prayer by saying " in Jesus name, amen" it is not heard by God. Is she right in saying this to my kids?? Is she right at all??

That's one where we need to separate what the bible says from our tradition.

Col 3:12-25
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism."

This is just one verse of many that talks about doing things in or through Jesus' name. This is a case of a tradition where the intent is to remind us that it is through Jesus that we come into the presence/power of God. However, I don't think if you don't say "In Jesus' name," that God doesn't hear you (I can't find that in the Bible).

I agree that we need to seperate what the Bible really says and tradition. I dont agree with my mom,and one day I will ask what the heck! But for now I am trying to figure out life, and seperate what I was taught and what is really true. I just pray I dont screw up my children's church beliefs up and have them at age 30 saying, WHAT??
I have made a list of things that I wonder if I was just taught that "just because" or if I was taught that because it is the truth and the way.
